DESCRIPTION:Join us at the River Center for our monthly lecture series!\nOur November speaker is Elizabeth Kelly, Environmental Scientist at Martin County Department of\nPublic Works\nFriday, November 1st 2024 | 12pm – 1pm\nA Microbial Perspective of Martin County Watersheds\nDr. Kelly is a water quality scientist specializing in environmental microbiology of recreational water, and urban ecology and restoration. Her research focuses on water quality in freshwater, coastal, and estuarine environments, specifically involving the study of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), and nutrients. Dr. Kelly’s publications include studies on Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie Estuary, and the Loxahatchee River; an analysis of the effects on water quality in the Florida Keys before, during, and after a major septic to sewer conversion project; and a study of the impact of beach management strategies on water quality. As part of the County’s work with Lake Okeechobee and County watershed and canals, Dr. Kelly collaborates with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), providing feedback on the amount, timing, and frequency of releases relative to the spikes in enterococci and the reports of cyanobacteria in the watershed.\nRegistration is required to attend.\nThis event is not recommended for children under the age of 14. \nRegister\n
