Summer Internship

Dates: Summer (mid-May through mid-August)

Times: Flexible, Monday – Saturday, between 8AM and 4 PM (Some weekends & nights required based on program requirements), ~20-45 hours per week. Staff & interns will work to create a schedule for each week of summer.

Job Description: 

Education Interns will be responsible for leading education tours and activities at the center for visiting school, homeschool, and camp groups. Flexible schedule is required working Monday -Saturday 8am-4pm (Some weekends & nights required based on program requirements). Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leading educational programs, greeting guests, caring for aquatic life, assisting in species collection, participating in outreach events, coordinating and recruiting volunteers, and assisting with special events. Education Interns are also encouraged to create, implement, and evaluate their own interest program or project during their time at the River Center with the assistance of our Educators.

Qualifications: 

Currently enrolled, degree-seeking, college student (preferred) or recent college graduate with a focus on: education, environmental sciences, marine sciences, biological science, water resources, etc.  Lifeguard or paddle certification a plus.  Applicants must be able to swim and successfully complete a Waterfront Lifeguard Certification Course.  Required to drive a pickup truck with trailer.  Basic computer skills.  Required to work long hours outdoors in all types of weather. The applicant must have a valid Florida’s Driver License, clear driving record, clear background check and pass a drug test and physical.

This internship is funded by the Loxahatchee River District.  All employees are required to submit to a Level II background screen pursuant to Florida Statute 435 as a condition of employment and continued employment which includes, but need not be limited to, employment history checks, driver’s license checks and statewide criminal checks, and may include local criminal records checks through local law enforcement agencies.

Fall / Spring Internship

Dates: Fall/Spring Semester

Times: Flexible- Tuesday-Saturday, between 8AM and 4 PM, ~20 hours per week. Some weekends & nights required based on program requirements. Staff & interns will work to create a set schedule.

Job Description: 

Education Interns will be responsible for leading education tours and activities at the center for visiting school, home school, and camp groups. Group tours occur Tuesday-Friday, 10a-12p.  Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, greeting guests, caring for aquatic life, assisting in species collection, participating in outreach events, coordinating and recruiting volunteers, leading children’s programs, and assisting with special events. Education Interns are also encouraged to create, implement, and evaluate their own interest program or project during their time at the River Center with the assistance of our Educators.

Qualifications: 

Currently enrolled, degree-seeking, college student (preferred) or recent graduate and minimum 18 years of age. Intern should have a general interest in any of the following: education (formal, informal, or interpretive), environmental sciences, marine sciences, biological science, water resources, etc.  Lifeguard or paddle certification a plus. The applicant must have valid Florida’s Driver License, a clear driving record, and pass a drug test and Level 2 background check.  Applicant must also have basic computer skills and the ability to drive a pickup truck.  Working outdoors will be required.

Training:

Hands-on training for all education programs will be provided by the River Center Staff. Interns will learn appropriate handling and care of fish and wildlife at the center. Interns will be invited to attend any applicable professional development workshops during their internship. Training on proper operation of gift shop register and inventory management is also provided.
